How your Cook County tax bill is calculated

Four numbers make your bill. Enter yours (they're all on the bill or your assessment notice) and see each step.

Enter your assessed value and tax rate.

What each number means

Assessed value is set by the Assessor at 10% of your home's estimated market value. It's the number an appeal can lower. The equalizer is set each year by the state so Cook County's assessments line up with the rest of Illinois. Exemptions come off the equalized value. The tax rate is the sum of every taxing district's rate (schools, park district, village, county and more).

So a $1,000 cut in assessed value saves about $1,000 × 3.03 × your tax rate a year. At 9% that's about $273.

Pay or look up your bill at the Cook County Treasurer.
